Long time

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Re-Rendering a lot...of the same, haha
Like the last time I got to vlog, these weeks contained a lot of re-rendering. With the new 10-layer method, it means that some scenes have too many artifacts... I tried rendering some shots with it to get a much sharper result, but honestly, some shots are only going to be as good as they are with the methods I currently have at my disposal. A lot of re-rendering has occurred these weeks. On...

Week of the ReRender

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, February 22, 2018, In : WIP
Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so wonderful!!

 - Re-Rendering a lot
Like I mentioned in the video, after seeing the issues with the upscaling (after noise reduction and even doing them together), I re-rendered the shot like GOD wanted in the first place. HE did give me leave to keep it as-is and just noise reduce and later upscale, but you really lose out on quality... It's like the smear between DVD and VHS - it's really obvious - not indetail, but in overall finish.
   Which leads me to my...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Rendering to video
After finishing the vlog, I wanted to create the thumbnail for the video and of course, every week I use something from that week to make it and I found nothing in the 2DHD folder when I looked in it in Gimp and when I double checked the rendering itself, guess what, it was rendering to video at only 6000kbps!!!!!!! I had missed switching it back from doing the OpenGL tests (which I render straight to video - no...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so good!!

 - Broken legs no more
Last week during recording, GOD gave me a solution to the frog problem - that I shared with you guys. This week, HE gave me another one as it relates to random frog rotation. With the first fix - the legs remain perfect, but they can only go in one direction. The fix in the week fixed the legs and they can go in any direction. Both fixes have their place. The first one allows you to have all your frogs go in the same direction....

Broken legs

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!
 - Broken legs?!
I am happy to say that I am not talking about my own legs here, haha. Whenever the frogs jumped in the floor footage, their IK's would lag behind and because of overall rotation, the legs would break and unbreak with every jump. This week I'm aiming to fix it, because just after the recording, GOD gave me the solution and I edited it in. So keep an eye out for that!

 - Shot finally done and wow!

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Eevee toon shader update
I am happy to say that I didn't even touch these this week. I did however find a problem with the documentation page. It kept breaking and I didn't know why until GOD showed me something very interesting. I started looking at the formatting and the images and as I scrolled down the page, I saw that the one image was broken halfway down - the brownish anisotropic toon shader example. The moment I removed th...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so good!! Thank YOU!

 - Eevee toon shader update
I am so thankful to be on this project! It does take up a lot of time, but in the end all that time will be more than made up with the much faster render time - not to mention the multiplied decades saved for other users as well!

This week I got to kick off with the release of v2 for the Eevee toon shaders. I'll be honest, I thought that it would end there and that my part would be done, but nope, hahaha. I go...

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - No vlog last week
Thankfully I was able to let you guys know there wasn't going to be a vlog, but at the same time I hate that there wasn't. Thankfully it is not for lack of productivity, hahaha. Some of this week did go into upgrading and improving the shaders as well (not yet available as v2, haha). GOD willing, soon!

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so wonderful!!

 - Frog problems
Now I spoke about the frogs two weeks ago. While the frog was finished ito modelling, there were some serious issues with the rig. You'll remember that the eyes were heavily drooped as a result. Now, personally, I don't have a problem with droopy eyes (mine are a little droopy too, hehe), but this was borderline terrified or extremely disappointed. So it had to be fixed.
I noticed a few things.

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Musical options
Generally, most movies would get someone to do what is known as scoring. When you score something, it can be a goal too, but not in music, haha. In music, you are simply writing the coordination for a symphony or orchestra or whatever set you envision for the particular part of the film or production.
In my case, this comes down to me. I have basically 0 experience in writing for a symphony. After Exodus I will h...

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so great!

 - There is a frog
Haha, finally! We have a frog! Progress people, progress! Small, but still there! Think I'm just plain tired tbh, haha.

Anyhow, I'll get to fixing the rigging this week, GOD willing, and then move on to animating it and then we can get on to chapter 8's more visual production. For the frogs, I would like to record real frogs croaking at night and I know of a location where I can do that, but it'll also have a loooooot of crickets. M...

The right frog

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so great!

 - Frog choice
So, it was sooooo long ago, how do we know what frog to use. Well, honestly and truly, we depend on the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT to make the absolute best selection possible. For me, HE takes me through research and in that process directs me to this or that article. For example, the research led to nothing on wikipedia alone. And I mean literally nothing. There was nothing to say what kind of frogs you would typically find in Egypt ...

Yay, finally got it into the video, hahaha. Pardon any poor sound quality this week. I have no idea where the interference is coming from, but it's removal really eats away at the audio quality and I hate it...

You guys know I like to make sure the audio I put out is the very best I am enabled to produce.

Of course, the grasshoppers are still a way off, but whenever I do get the chance to, I like to make the sounds that will come up. That way when the time comes I can just throw them into the edit - keeps the work going. Anyway, last week I spoke about using tape for wind noise and this week (recorded it last week) I got to edit it!! Yay!! GOD is so great!

  - Audio to-do list for chapter 7 (excludes music)
I am so glad to be this close to done with chapter 7! GOD knows how much just this chapter and all the rest of the prep work for it has stretched me in every way!! I am very satisfied with the quality and the length as well. I'm nowhere trying to lengthen it unecessarily, because it's not supposed to bore you to tears - it's supposed to be experienced, like Eric Hovind said about Genesis: Paradise ...

This week's vlog!

GOD is so great!

 - Sound work
Almost no sound work for the week. In fact, so little that I don't recall if I actually did any this week, hahaha.

 - Dynamic Plaster
Thankfully, I did get to play with this effect a bit, but did not get far. The problem here is that for hieroglyphics, you want solid colors (no shadows) and that means the effect needs some modification. Of course, you do get exceptions, because someone always wants to be different, but in this case, I...

Last week I talked about a few issues with the sound. I forgot about these in the vlog, but no matter - it saves drastically on data and honestly, you won't notice much of a difference anyway (a reflection on how small the adjustments are), hahaha.

Anyway, this week I saw for the first time that GOD knew I needed it, before I knew I needed it (nothing new there, hahaha).

GOD is so awesome!

 - New 3D method
In the spirit of posting a new tutorial two weeks ago, GOD gave me two of the coolest gifts for production:
 - A new 3D method
 - that's 2 seconds faster and much higher quality (with a catch though)

Over the passed few years, GOD has given me an amazing amazing 3D method that enables me to do 3D renders for just a few seconds more than a 2D one. Ever since the whole process started, it has been a total dream of mine to be able to pr...

This has been a very sore point of contention for me! Wow! I never knew that something so simple could frustrate me to such an extent!     I watched an amazing presentation on color grading a while back. An absolutely brilliant colorist spoke about using various equipment to color grade and how you can actually grade something with much much higher accuracy if you look first at the equipment and know what you're going for. It kinda works like a read-out that shows you where everything is at and how strong everything is and where there is room for improvement. You coul...

GOD is just wow!!

Without a doubt one of the hardest materials to produce for a flat shaded look, I really learned a lot about the approach to metal in anime and the results are super surprising!
Shockingly, in most cases, you were just looking at the equivalent of a diffuse shader or even more alarming, a shadeless one! In almost every situation from the 80's, you would find that metal is purely metal, because it is metal - often times, at the most...

GOD is super!

  - Massive Speed boost
This is one has me a little frazzled to be honest, hahaha. Blender has the weirdest issues sometimes. When I work in the compositor. The 2D compositing takes a second, if not less. With the 3D node in the project, it takes approx 48 seconds to convert the final 2D composite to 3D with the depth map. That means, a 2:29 render, takes 3:18 to complete. If I make a clean project with only the 3D node and I use image sequences for the...

GOD is so amazing!!!!

 - Anime and 3D
Oh yes, we're kicking off with the main point of this week's video, which ironically only took a bit of the afternoon and a piece of the evening! haha.
Anime and 3D seem to be at odds with one another in various ways, but particularly in frame rate. There are scenes in anime that get the full 24fps treatment and then there are those, where the head is perfectly still for like 2 or three seconds and only the lips and eyes move...

I don't recall having spoken about this in a previous vlog, but since we're on the screenplay and storyboards phase, with some experimentation and even final renders, I do find this to be a bit of an issue.    I'm the kinda person that wants to just jump in and do it, but even for Esther I didn't do that. I did for Genesis and I believe that's why it wasn't visually as strong as these are so far.    A bit of a touchy subject for me, because I wanted to be able to render the wheat in it's physical, or at least, plane form, but for this scale of scene and my PC, I am so thankful GOD gave me this solution!! It works beautifully! Part of what HE used to inspire this particular idea, was Superbook's clip of Ruth gleaning in Boaz's field (they did a stunning wide shot of the field). GOD is soooo good!!

 - Normal editing
Now, this is a bit of a topic for me that I really try to avoid, as it's editing is really not as straight forward as I would like it to be, but it certainly not a bad thing. It really enables you to create stylistic inaccuracy while still being well able to move lights and all sorts of other scene objects and still get the right look. (not 100% what I wanted, but the closest yet, PRAISE GOD!)

Now, while this is not 100% the result I was hoping for, HE did command me to do a tutorial for it, which you can see down here. Include...

GOD is awesome!!!!

Today, we get to talk about the subject of a new tutorial (Action lines, whoop whoop), as well as some travesties you can easily avoid (triple whoop whoop, haha).

- Night scene done:
Finally, the night scene section is finished. Has been months of hard work and GOD has been so awesome and I've learned a ton, but it is finally finished. Now, i...

Animation and sound effects

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, March 10, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!

Today's update takes a bit of a different route. I'm actually gonna let you watch everything I've been graced to put together so far - not fullHD, as that takes significantly longer and this took long enough to upload last night so I can actually share it, hahaha.

So, here is everything put together so far:

(Only 01:08, so it's a quick watch)

Now let's get into what went into this, hahaha.

Animation challenges and tips:
- Make sure your models are complete before rendering.
Sounds kinda duh...

Render render render

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, March 3, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!

Today's post is absolutely loaded with renders and a video or two and we talk about dialogue! haha.

- 7 Chamberlains
Let's kick it off where we ended last week - modeling! When I posted last time, with each post, I wondered how many chamberlains the king actually had attending him. And oh yes, there were 7. It's in the first chapter of Esther and I was like NOOOOOOOooooooooo.......... Haha. By this time, I had already modeled one and GOD insisted from the start of it, that I make a time...

The king's room

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, February 18, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!

Time for the weekly update!

This week, the focus has been on the king's room. For me, this is incredibly difficult, because I find no info on traditional Persian interiors. I do know that they did do a lot of things the same way as the Indians did - lots of arches, pillows, low to the floor furniture, etc., but honestly, I don't know to what extent this is the case, so I have to follow peace and ironically, it has made for quite a modern appearance.

Additionally, since the first time we...

Gardens galore

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, February 4, 2016, In : General
Hey all!

Today's progress update is rife with huge updates and a few more speed up tips and some general tips as well! :D

To start off, I would like to talk about the additional speed up tips GOD gave me through this week. I cannot even begin to express my gratitude!! I definitely think that a single frame would have taken 12 to 20 minutes to complete, had HE not teach me all these tricks!!

 - ZTransparency
Yesterday, GOD had me do a post on how to fix the edge problem with ZTransparency. I'm not...

Mordecai's ride

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Monday, January 11, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!!

After so much work, it's hard to see him finally on the horse, but immensely satisfying. GOD is awesome!!! :D

He looks great and he looks like he's having a blast - which is what I believe it should look like. It was an honor GOD bestowed on him as part of his vindication from the hands of Haman.

There are still a few things to fix here - such as the horse's front legs' weight painting. The bones specifically. The cloth below the saddle doesn't have strong enough weights, so when the s...

Horse WIP

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Friday, January 1, 2016, In : WIP
Hey everyone!

Today I got to work on the horse again and GOD was so faithful, as usual, haha, and I'm so happy with the results. I tried giving the horse more typically anime eyes, but that made it look more cartooney and character-like than a functional horse. So anyway, while there is still a solid amount of character in the eyes, they are not nearly as cartooney as they get when you add those black outlines, haha.

So without further ado, I'm going to let you see it below, starting with the v...

Horse progress

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, In : WIP
Hey all!

When we last left Mordecai, he was absolutely horseless. That means his voice was clear, hahaha, no. The king's horse had to be brought for him to ride on. He already got the king's outfit and now was the time for the horse to be given as well.

Since the king doesn't even exists as a character on my PC yet, he was in no position to own a horse, so I had to make one, haha.

These are how the horse progressed to it's current wip status:

And finally, where it is as of this morning!

There are ...

Mordecai Progress

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, December 17, 2015, In : WIP
Hey all!

Today, despite Esther 6 not being done yet, I felt lead to publish the site, so I hope that you are still blessed by what you see here.

Today, with this publishing, I also feel lead to share with you the progress on Mordecai. In Esther 6, you only see him once and that is when Haaman has to parade him in a display of honor through the streets, so he has to look fancy. I may change the head dress to be more fancy, but in general, this is the kind the jews apparently wore, called a mookl...
