Pharaoh's room done for now

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Saturday, June 13, 2020, In : News
Pharaoh's room was quite the challenge and I spoke about this before. Since he was a royal and thought himself a literal god, I can promise you he wanted the best of the best and wanted you to throw that away and get something even better! lol. No, just kidding. I don't know how much of a brat he was. For all I know he actually cared much for his people, but had a prideful and fearful heart that caused his irrational choices - apart from GOD hardening his heart - which is still quite a myster...

Abaddon - The Destroyer

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, April 16, 2020, In : Teaching
Listen to the post:

Hey all!

So yesterday, my cousin and I were talking about the end times and a teaching we had listened to earlier in the week concerning the same, and I recalled the part in Exodus 12 (thank YOU LORD) about the destroyer, so I did a little digging to see if the mention on Revelation is the same from Exodus.
Let's start with these:

"And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
And he opened the...

Slow and somewhat steady

Hey all!

I'm still on pharaoh's room and while most of it is organized and set to receive some frogs, including Pharaoh, I am still at a bit of a loss as to what to do with the open area left. You could say his room is "half full" hehehe.

So, on that note, let's focus on something that is finished and that is Pharaoh's hand mirror. Now, they didn't have mirrors like we do today and I did some extra digging:

Pharaoh's room

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, In : News
Hey all!

As you all know, we are still at the frog plague (thankfully not for lack of work on Exodus itself, hehe). To be more precise, we are at the point where the plague continues over night, because the conversation went like this:

"And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only? And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to th...

The song is finished

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, April 25, 2019, In : News
Hey all!

Spoiler: Yes, the song is finished, hehehe.

I am so overjoyed that it is completed! It took me about two months to get it done, just because I was so busy with other things and procrastinating!

One day I knew the LORD wanted me to work on it, my excuse was to sweep the house, hehehe. It's not because I resented or didn't want to work on it, but there is always the enemy there telling you all manner of nonsense about how it will or will not turn out, about how much people care, or shall ...

Hey all!

I bet you thought I stopped working on Exodus and that it is a tower to defeat, NOPE! Still working hard. The only hold up was that GOD had me take a short break from it to release the node groups and even then I didn't really stop thinking about it. Check out the node groups video and link:

GOD is so amazing!
Link here.

So how far am I?
Well, still at the frog plague (not as little work went on as it sounds) - where Pharaoh is to call Moses and Aaron after the magicians copied them. The ...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Re-Rendering a lot...of the same, haha
Like the last time I got to vlog, these weeks contained a lot of re-rendering. With the new 10-layer method, it means that some scenes have too many artifacts... I tried rendering some shots with it to get a much sharper result, but honestly, some shots are only going to be as good as they are with the methods I currently have at my disposal. A lot of re-rendering has occurred these weeks. On...

Week of the ReRender

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, February 22, 2018, In : WIP
Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so wonderful!!

 - Re-Rendering a lot
Like I mentioned in the video, after seeing the issues with the upscaling (after noise reduction and even doing them together), I re-rendered the shot like GOD wanted in the first place. HE did give me leave to keep it as-is and just noise reduce and later upscale, but you really lose out on quality... It's like the smear between DVD and VHS - it's really obvious - not indetail, but in overall finish.
   Which leads me to my...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

 - Rendering to video
After finishing the vlog, I wanted to create the thumbnail for the video and of course, every week I use something from that week to make it and I found nothing in the 2DHD folder when I looked in it in Gimp and when I double checked the rendering itself, guess what, it was rendering to video at only 6000kbps!!!!!!! I had missed switching it back from doing the OpenGL tests (which I render straight to video - no...

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is so good!!

 - Broken legs no more
Last week during recording, GOD gave me a solution to the frog problem - that I shared with you guys. This week, HE gave me another one as it relates to random frog rotation. With the first fix - the legs remain perfect, but they can only go in one direction. The fix in the week fixed the legs and they can go in any direction. Both fixes have their place. The first one allows you to have all your frogs go in the same direction....

Hey all!
This week's vlog!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!
 - Broken legs?!
I am happy to say that I am not talking about my own legs here, haha. Whenever the frogs jumped in the floor footage, their IK's would lag behind and because of overall rotation, the legs would break and unbreak with every jump. This week I'm aiming to fix it, because just after the recording, GOD gave me the solution and I edited it in. So keep an eye out for that!

GOD is beyond words!!! Just wow!!

I am happy to say that I didn't even touch these this week. I did however find a problem with the documentation page. It kept breaking and I didn't know why until GOD showed me something very interesting. I started looking at the formatting and the images and as I scrolled down the page, I saw that the one image was broken halfway down - the brownish anisotropic toon shader example. GOD is so good!! Thank YOU!

I am so thankful to be on this project! It does take up a lot of time, but in the end all that time will be more than made up with the much faster render time - not to mention the multiplied decades saved for other users as well!

GOD is so wonderful!!

 - Frog problems
Now I spoke about the frogs two weeks ago. While the frog was finished ito modelling, there were some serious issues with the rig. You'll remember that the eyes were heavily drooped as a result. Now, personally, I don't have a problem with droopy eyes (mine are a little droopy too, hehe), but this was borderline terrified or extremely disappointed. So it had to be fixed.
I noticed a few things.

Generally, most movies would get someone to do what is known as scoring. When you score something, it can be a goal too, but not in music, haha. In music, you are simply writing the coordination for a symphony or orchestra or whatever set you envision for the particular part of the film or production.

Anyhow, I'll get to fixing the rigging this week, GOD willing, and then move on to animating it and then we can get on to chapter 8's more visual production. GOD is so great!

 - Frog choice
So, it was sooooo long ago, how do we know what frog to use. Well, honestly and truly, we depend on the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT to make the absolute best selection possible. For me, HE takes me through research and in that process directs me to this or that article. For example, the research led to nothing on wikipedia alone. And I mean literally nothing. There was nothing to say what kind of frogs you would typically find in Egypt ...

This is one has me a little frazzled to be honest, hahaha. Blender has the weirdest issues sometimes. When I work in the compositor. The 2D compositing takes a second, if not less. With the 3D node in the project, it takes approx 48 seconds to convert the final 2D composite to 3D with the depth map. That means, a 2:29 render, takes 3:18 to complete.    Anime and 3D seem to be at odds with one another in various ways, but particularly in frame rate. There are scenes in anime that get the full 24fps treatment and then there are those, where the head is perfectly still for like 2 or three seconds and only the lips and eyes move...

Locusts abound

Hey all!

This week's vlog!!!

GOD is so awesome!
 - Herbs and fruit trees
In Exodus, GOD specifically makes mention of herbs. I was really in the dark about what they would define as herbs, for the simple reason that I don't know plants all that well. I do know what a fruit tree is and I can see the difference between it and mint, for example, but I don't know what technically qualifies and herb. For example, you also get the ever ambiguous tomato, haha. So, I felt led to simply check out the d...

Hey all!

This week's vlog! :D

GOD is so awesome!

 - Video progress
I am so thankful I got to finish it this week! It looked like a big thing to complete and while it took a while, I'm very happy with the result. I cannot emphasize what a difference it makes to storyboard something before jumping into it. GOD really gives you so many ideas that it's stunning! Too many to use and you know exactly which one is the right one! GOD is so good!!

Storyboards drawn halfway

Hey all!

This week's vlog!

GOD is super awesome!!

 - Productivity
Obviously I've written about this a few times and I am so thankful that GOD made this week stand out among others! In two days HE helped me draw 81 or 82 frames for the storyboards (that excludes the few I had to leave out because of error or poor drawing, hahaha) and a new tutorial for Cycles. I cannot say thank YOU enough!! GOD is so good!!

 - New tutorial
On Saturday morning, and I mean really early, GOD enabled me to quickl...

Rough storyboards

Hey all!

This weeks vlog!!!

GOD is so awesome!!!

 - Lice in and on?
This week I saw another one of those "contradictions". This one follows two verses:

"And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt. And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast....

Hey all!

This week's vlog!!
GOD is super amazing!

 - Apparent contradictions
In the Bible there are many so-called contradictions. Many of these are purely based on information that's not there or that seems to conflict. In this post, and the video, I get to focus on one I came across this week in regards to Pharaoh's livestock. In the murrain plague, it clearly states that all of Pharaoh's cattle died (meaning all his livestock, not just cows and oxen), but nothing of Israel's died. Later, in th...

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is super awesome!!

 - Three days' journey and JESUS
JESUS is called by many names or titles, but one of those is that HE is the only begotten Son of GOD. In Exodus, GOD called Jacob (Israel) HIS firstborn, because JESUS is the vine and we are the branches. The Jews were the first nation that GOD chose, not because they were the best, but because they were the most difficult of all nations. Not to be insulting, but it's by HIS own words and HE even said that when ...

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so stunning!

 - Storyboards continue from last week
Last week I told you guys in the post that I still had a few frames not yet scanned, well those made it into the video as well as the shot list for the plague of frogs as well as it's conclusion. Progress people!! Plague two be boarded! :D

 - Writing style
Haha, this is something I keep coming back to. The King James is notorious for being not to user-friendly in use of English. Thankfully, that's not an issue her...

Hey all!

This weeks vlog!!

GOD is so amazing!

 - 7 days passing and other plagues
I don't recall having spoken about this in a previous vlog, but since we're on the screenplay and storyboards phase, with some experimentation and even final renders, I do find this to be a bit of an issue. We only have a single indication of how long a plague lasted and that is in the last verse of chapter 7 which reads:

"And seven days were fulfilled, after that the LORD had smitten the river." Exodus 7:25, KJV

Hey all!

This week's vlog!!

GOD is so awesome!!

 - Very little time this week
I had an amazing week. I got to go visit my cousin over the weekend and got to some much needed garden and house work, so this week, I literally had only 1 afternoon and an evening, haha. GOD made it such a productive afternoon - it was just amazing! I still felt pulled to procrastinate, but it was much less than usual.

 - A stinging experience
Also got stung by bees for the first time, haha. I was mowing the lawn and ...

The first render

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so amazing!!!

After the bulls I was stumped, I thought I had done a lot more during the week and GOD just told me to go get breakfast and relax and HE'll show me what I missed and it wasn't that I didn't show it all, but I didn't mention it all. In other words, the fields were shortened, characters were fixed back to the ground, shadoof's rigged, landscape modified, etc. It's easy to miss little things, hahaha. After breakfast, I recorded the second part and ad...

Fields of wheat

Hey all!

This week's vlog!!

GOD is so incredible!!

 - Fields and detail
A bit of a touchy subject for me, because I wanted to be able to render the wheat in it's physical, or at least, plane form, but for this scale of scene and my PC, I am so thankful GOD gave me this solution!! It works beautifully! Part of what HE used to inspire this particular idea, was Superbook's clip of Ruth gleaning in Boaz's field (they did a stunning wide shot of the field). They could put a lot more physical detail...

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so amazing!!!

As you guys can see, the focus this week was on characters - extras to be exact! I'm almost finished with them to the point where I can add them to the environment, but I still have a few characters to make single objects.

Definitely a lot of work went into these characters or extras, but just to give you guys a bit more info on how to approach characters, I want to list a few things:

Chamberlains from Esther 6 - All the same base character (second r...

Hey all!

This week's vlog!

GOD is super amazing!!

- Very short update
Honestly, still struggling a bit with procrastination, but this week I had a lot on my plate beyond Exodus, so I didn't get to as much as I wanted to, but I am so thankful that GOD keeps prodding me to go sit down and work on it, so I always have something to show. Some progress is better than no progress, but a lot of stuff getting done, means leaps and bounds towards completion, so that's the goal for every week. Please ke...

Hey all!

This week's vlog!

GOD is super awesome!

- Same day
Some of you may remember on the previous video, that the aim was to finish the characters and add them to the city the same day. Yeah, I really underestimated the amount of work that was left to get them ready for that, haha. Some of the characters didn't have expressions. I had to see whether the shapekeys were maintained as they were made single objects. I had surprises from modifiers. Goodness, there was a lot of challenges this we...

Citizens for a country

Hey all!

This week's vlog!

GOD is so gracious!!

- Procrastination
Now there is something everyone can relate to in some way. I've had a serious struggle with this over the Christmas and new year. I was really really irritated by how little I got done and felt like it would take me 10 years to finish at that pace and GOD showed me that the days I chose to do certain tasks were out of wack and not only that, but watching a lot of videos online also stole hours, along with Facebook news feed scro...

Hey all!

This week's vlog!

GOD is so awesome!!!

Background elements
Quite a near and dear pet project, haha. I want to have my backgrounds appear painterly and while there are many ways to get close to it, I have not had the leading on it that GOD would help me get it in an evening or something. This is more like one of those insanely complex things that need a lot of different facets to be in place for the look to work, so each facet needs time to learn. This week, GOD's focus was on "brush ...

Hey all!

This week's vlog!!!

GOD is super amazing!!!

- Goats
The goats are still not a topic that is finished this week. Since they are still the only animals added and the video is named after them, they also still feature (I did not change the camera's animation). What did change about them was their layout and their size (seed adjustment).

- Overall scene proportions
While the goats got adjusted, they were not the only ones that needed it. The houses were too big compared to the palace, th...

Today's vlog!!!

GOD is super awesome!!! :D

- Particle distribution
Quite a topic to say the least! Particles are extremely useful for increasing scene size (and memory consumption), while keeping render times as low as possible. In fact, it makes scenes that were impossible on a single PC possible! I learned about this during the Esther 6 project, when GOD lead me to use particles to add details to the buildings, just because it was faster and on another project, where I had to make a...

A palmy vlog

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so super!! :D

 - Snake improvements
The snake was the first thing to be dealt with this week. I spent quite a large amount of time on it in the attempts to re-rig it and see if the kink goes away, but the conclusion, as in the video, was that it was only reduced, but did not go away. What did make it go away was animating the head using the 3D cursor. When the head goes forward, the neck is kept straight, but this makes the nose point towards the ground. Just til...

- Pillars
GOD's idea! I totally missed saying that in the video, but it is so needed, because I actually felt over the weekend that I was going to have to model new pillars from scratch, because the court's ones were just way too short. In HIS usual calm demeanor HE just let me know that I can stretch out the pillars, no big deal. And it worked amazingly well! I am so thankful! HE helped me fix the alignment as well as the stumped point, s...

Hey all!!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so good!!

This week, despite being so occupied with other things, GOD really shone through and enabled me to still get a lot done for the project! I am sooooo thankful!

The biggest reason for this week's deviation from the normal, is that HE has assigned me a week of work in the garden. And I don't mean just a little snip and mow, oh no! We're talking like an overhaul. See, because I do a lot on projects like this, I can't get to everything else as well - that m...

Hey all!

This week's vlog:

GOD is so wonderful!!

- Audio:
   Voices
Like I said in the video, the stark reality of a lack of voice actors is kinda a surprise after you start production. Of course, this round, nothing new, but I have considered various means of achieving different voices - even considered using digital voices, but they just don't really act, you know. There are better programs out there that do allow you to get better voices, but unfortunately, my budget does not allow for any n...

Hey all!

GOD is beyond wonderful!

This week's vlog entails a lot. It's shorter, but from a general look back, this may have been the most productive week yet!

- Statues
Another particle distribution, this one is much smaller. Only about 6 statues. Having said that, making 1 took enough effort, hahaha. I cannot thank GOD enough for HIS insights into how to make it properly. It was so well configured that it worked superbly for Freestyle, even though that was not the final goal.
Additionally, it ...

Hey all!

Today's vlog maybe? hahaha

GOD is so wonderful!!

What a productive week this has been! I am so thankful for what got done!! I just want GOD to give me such speed that it would make my head spin, haha.

 - Characters
In the previous vlog, I spoke about adding more variety to certain characters. In the beginning of the week, I was able to edit them quite a bit more. I'm not 100% satisfied with 1 of them (or say 1 out of 2, as in one of the two needs to be changed), because they still look...

This was my first time creating a font and I just have to witness that GOD loves throwing me into the deep end and helping me swim, haha. It is such an adventure when you learn to lean on HIM. It doesn't mean bad stuff doesn't happen or that things are just a breeze, but it does mean that all things work together for your good, because you love GOD and are called according to HIS good purpose (Romans 8:28).

Smoke and hieroglyphs with Make Human

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, October 6, 2016, In : Tutorials and tips
Hey all!

Today's video:

(GOD is so good!!!!!)

 - Make Human for Egyptian hieroglyphics
Hieroglyphics have 3 sections, from what I have seen. Might be more if you can actually read it, hahaha. Those three are:
1) Fine print
Everyday reading type of figures. These include the bowl, horned viper, numbers, such as the n meaning 10 or a single stripe meaning 1, etc. Making a font for this, but it will not be useful to anyone who can read it, because it'd all be gibberish and out of order (hopefully a...

Hey all!

Time for another vlog! Without any delay:

GOD is beyond amazing!!!

In this week's blog post, we'll be taking a small peak into how these things work. A lot of work goes into these videos every week and I am so privileged to be able to make them and teach you guys. I consider it an honor!

When it comes to fire, it seems that few things are as frustrating to get right in 3D and make it look like it was drawn. One thing in particular that makes it so hard is it's reflective and br...
