Render times and progress

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, January 28, 2016, In : General
Hey all!

Super excited to be sharing with you guys the progress from the last week. Passed few days have not been the most productive, but ironically, the focus was in a different direction this week, but you'll see on that later.

 - Verse Image -
First, I felt lead to make use of the project and it's assets to create this week's verse image and I really liked the result. Because my hosting is not that big, I'm trying to limit the content I post, so I'm simply linking to the Cross Allegiance pa...

Update time

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, In : General
Hey all!

As you've noticed, I've been a bit quiet. It's not because I haven't been working, but because GOD suggested that I update less. I was really frustrated because of the time it takes to write these so often - I like keeping you guys up to date, just not every 5mins, hahaha. If I do, the project takes significantly longer than it needs to, so, here is the first gapped update :)!

Okay, let's start with the coolest things GOD showed me that make this project even possible:

1) Particles:

King's palace pillar

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, January 14, 2016,
Hey all!

Whooh! What a piece of work, but so glad it's done and to a high level of detail - hopefully not too high, hahaha.

Okay, so with every progress shot, we can discuss the process:

The first challenge was getting the interlocking pattern correct. I thought I could do it in one go
and I believe you can, but simply duplicating and rotating the same shape a bit, gave exactly the pattern I
needed for the foot or base of the pillar -  GOD's idea, not mine!

The bulls were a bit of an issue for me. ...

Compositing in order WIP

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, In : WIP
Good day everyone!

Today is nothing super fancy. I just get to share an update on Mordecai and Haman going through the city street. In this case, I stuck pillars in, so there would be something casting shadows on them too (you can see it on Mordecai's shoulder). The goal is to go for unusual contrast and a painterly look. I like the result though.

Still a long way to go

For more info on this particular method of compositing smooth shadows with toon shading, check out my tutorial for Blender Rend...

Mordecai's ride

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Monday, January 11, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!!

After so much work, it's hard to see him finally on the horse, but immensely satisfying. GOD is awesome!!! :D

He looks great and he looks like he's having a blast - which is what I believe it should look like. It was an honor GOD bestowed on him as part of his vindication from the hands of Haman.

There are still a few things to fix here - such as the horse's front legs' weight painting. The bones specifically. The cloth below the saddle doesn't have strong enough weights, so when the s...

Turn that table

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Saturday, January 9, 2016, In : General
Hey all!

Initially, I had the horse rotating on a platform, but because of issues with the one front leg on the ground, I just attached everything else to the platform he's on and now everything is rotating except the horse, but you wouldn't know it, unless I told you, which I now did, hahaha.

Anyway, this is how the horse looks when rendered using the viewport in Blender:

This animation, as if you didn't notice, is called a turntable. Mostly these are used to show off a model. Think of it as ...

Leg Fixed

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, In : WIP
Hey all!

Yesterday, I shared some progress with you all about the horse and his legs, the front ones particularly and today, I get to share with you, what they look like fixed!

(There was no issue with the rig)

The problem came in with how the front legs were modelled. Usually, horses have front legs that have the individual parts distinguishable by really prominent joints, so you could say all the individual pieces have an almost hour-glass like shape (thick>thin>thick). After thinning out the ...

Horse WIP continues

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, In : WIP
Good day everyone!

I have another post for you all today on the horse - yes, it's still not done and when you see the image, you will know why, hahaha.

As many of you know, horses have legs that move a certain way. If their legs don't move that way, they look funny. Through a lot of reference, GOD has helped me put this render together, after some serious rigging (and it wasn't even done yet!!):

(Still some adjustment that can be made to the weight painting to make it look better, but you would ...

Horse WIP

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Friday, January 1, 2016, In : WIP
Hey everyone!

Today I got to work on the horse again and GOD was so faithful, as usual, haha, and I'm so happy with the results. I tried giving the horse more typically anime eyes, but that made it look more cartooney and character-like than a functional horse. So anyway, while there is still a solid amount of character in the eyes, they are not nearly as cartooney as they get when you add those black outlines, haha.

So without further ado, I'm going to let you see it below, starting with the v...
